Why Choose 4-year-old preschool over 4-year-old kindergarten (4K)?

Sometime in the last decade, there has been a noticeable shift in Wisconsin early elementary education to focus on academics earlier and earlier (specifically reading, writing, and math skills). Theory seems to have shifted farther away from the belief that young children learn best through play and social interaction. However, thankfully, there are still places like Mayflower Nursery School that know the most powerful tool for educating 4-5 year- olds is play. I love that Mayflower shares its weekly themes with parents and rotates toys, games, and activities into the classroom that relate to the week’s theme; it helps our children continue to discover and experience new things as they play and interact with each other.

I also love that Mayflower educates our children about healthy nutrition through its snack and no-treat policies. I’m not aware of any other school in the Green Bay area that is dedicated to such a policy. It is such a relief to send my child to Mayflower everyday knowing that those healthy habits we teach at home are not compromised at this tender, impressionable age; I’m confident it will help translate into lifelong healthy habits.

Another thing I love about Mayflower is that outdoor play is now incorporated into every day. Many other half-day programs do not make that commitment, but it is important to me that my children also learn to love active outdoor play with lots of fresh air.

Mayflower is special for all of these reasons and many more. Thank you to the teachers who have dedicated themselves to making Mayflower such a special place. You visibly do what you love and love what you do. Thank you for loving our children like your own and passing on the love of learning!
